THE FASHIONABLE LIFE IDINING
The Next Small Thing
Somebody stop Todd English, whisper the naysay- ers. He’s the culinary answer to Genghis Khan: an unstoppable conqueror too busy plotting his next restaurant conquest to much bother with tending to his last. Alas, much of that sentiment shadows — if not precisely mirrors — the gossip columns’ squalid obsession with his personal life rather than his professional one. But somewhere along the line, those obsessed
forgot about the food that he and his generals still manage to create:
gutsy, big-flavored, and thoroughly addictive dishes. They’ve ignored
how good he’s become at creating restaurants that actually work. And
they’ve neglected one very real possibility: That he might just fall for a
particular place, and spend as much time there as possible, making the
food as downright excellent as possible. That place, it would seem, is The
Summer House.
Understandably so. A cluster of hobbit-size cottages (renovated 18th-
century fisherman’s shacks) in Nantucket’s sleepy Siasconset, The Summer House is an antidote to the island’s clogged downtown. It’s quiet,
but still buzzes with global luminaries. (Around here, Katie Couric and
Candace Bushnell sightings are just another day at the beach.) It’s unpretentious, but unpretentiously stylish. (The beachside pool’s a stage for as
many Vuitton maillots as flip-flops.) Meanwhile, it just so happens to be
one of those kinds of places that English often alights to in his personal
time. And the beneficiaries, without question, are those who dine in the
seaside-chic restaurant he’s taken over here.
After partnering with the property’s owners, Boston lawyer Danielle
deBenedictis, real estate developer Peter Karlson, and their son, Christopher Karlson, English is yielding dishes that riff on his greatest hits,
but spins them with a singular love for the island. To wit: His well-documented way with tuna tartare (years ago, he was one of the first to showcase it at Olives) shows up in the tuna martini, which sings of freshness
over a silky, salty seaweed salad — all of it doused with crunchy fried
wontons. Ditto the wild striper — also reminiscent of earlier menus, but
this time hooked to fresh-as-can-be roasted beets, lentils, and a carefully
balanced blood orange sauce.
The upshot? English’s well-oiled restaurant know-how, but this time
rolled out in a highly personal, family-run setting. All in all, it’s the kind
of experience that transports you to a place that’s as new as it is familiar
— and that holds you solidly in the moment, until most all other ports of
conquest recede. — ALEXANDRA HALL
