EDITOR’S LETTER
You’ve Been Punked
No, the lip piercing you
see here isn’t real. Ditto
the sleeve of tattoos —
and the sneer. Rather,
they’re all proof of just
how easy it was to get a
tad swept away by the
rock ’n’ roll vibe (and
more specifically, the
corresponding accesso-
ries, props, and attitude)
that pervaded our photo
shoot for the 2010 Best
Dressed Bostonians.
This year, our third
creating the list, we once again chose a true salad of the city’s style-
makers — people representing every stripe of occupation, culture,
income bracket, and personal style aesthetic.
That last category, I’d argue, stands as the most powerful; it’s the
most emblematic of who a dresser has decided to be in the now,
either because or regardless of their background. And that’s precisely why we chose to spin the photos accompanying this year’s
Best Dressed List with a rock edge: As the symbiosis between music, art, design, and fashion has proven over and over again, there
is no one single road to inspiration anymore. And likewise, there
is no one road to personal style: Rock ’n’ roll touches are as potent
a foil for bespoke men’s suiting and satin skirts as they are for cult
designer denim and prim shift dresses.
Is punk really the biggest element in all (or even most) of our
listmakers’ closets? Hardly. But fashion is never entirely literal.
Neither is music. And both symbolize the spirit of individualism,
and are inspirational and aspirational. We certainly hope this
year’s list is, too. — ALEXANDRA HALL
