EDITOR’S LETTER
Get What You Give
WISH
FULFILLMENT
Mom of two and
still one of the coolest people
you’ll ever meet, singer/producer Kay Hanley rocks a few
festive looks and shares her
list of holiday must-haves.
4 MERRY & BRIGHT
With the right tactics, throwing
a fabulous holiday shindig can
be pure joy and peace (of mind).
Most holiday gift guides have
more than earned their tarnished
reputations. The economy
notwithstanding, too many
market editors seem to still take
pleasure in taunting us with a
deluge of gifts just out of our
price range — when, that is, they
aren’t taunting us with a deluge
of gifts that are completely out of
our price range. Well, this season
we’ve set out to negate the idea
that gifts need to be priced in the
stratosphere to be chic and/or
meaningful.
9 ASK THE SARTORIALIST
Finding heels that are as comfy
as they are hot, hostesses who
overdress, and whether or not
to don pants to black-tie shindigs.
14 BON VIVANT Snazzy shots from
all the best shows and fetes of this
year’s Boston Fashion Week.
This year, we have two gift
guides coming your way. Our
regular editors’ picks will show up in next month’s December issue —
an essentialized list of 10 no-fail buys, none over $300. The other you’ll
find in the issue you’re holding. (It’s more a wish list than gift list, but
can certainly be used as inspiration for either one.) It comes straight
from Kay Hanley, the down-to-earth singer and Boston native — who,
after adding “producer,” “businesswoman,” and “mom” to her reper-
toire in recent years, is still every bit as opinionated, fun, and above all,
unpretentious as she was back when she was fronting Letters To Cleo.
Find her personal holiday picks (alongside some of her favorite festive
dresses and accessories) on page 11.
Speaking of festive things, we’ve rolled out a slightly larger peek at
the city’s best recent parties this issue in order to give Boston Fashion
Week its due — including all the terrific shows and fb’s kickoff party. (A
big shout-out, by the way, goes to W Hotels and Residences for helping
us make it so over-the-top creative.) Look for all of it starting on page 14.
Which brings up another great party that happened this past weekend: fb was beyond proud to help sponsor a gala by Room to Grow,
which raised well over $300,000 to help babies born into poverty. You’ll
see from the photos in our December issue that it was an incredible —
and incredibly touching — evening. And you can be sure it will top my
personal list of things I want more of this holiday. — ALEXANDRA HALL
