EDITOR’S LETTER
Pretty is as Pretty Does
Outer beauty: Who doesn’t crave it, especially at this time of year? That’s why we’ve
committed this, our annual Beauty Issue,
to the easiest ways of achieving it. This
month’s big feature cuts to the chase, spilling our favorite 25 go-to beauty resources in
the city. Everything and everyone you need
to look incredible is in here: skin experts,
masseuses, hair colorists and stylists, body
scrubbers, and lash experts.
There’s no question our world needs
exterior beauty — on people, in parks, museums, restaurants, on stages
and sidewalks — essentially, in as many places as possible.
But on the other hand, if it turns out that when the going gets tough, all
we want to do is look good, then we won’t have very much to be proud of.
Now more than ever, I’m taken with a different kind of beauty — the
kind displayed by people taking unprecedented steps in brave ways to
support each other as a community. I’m talking about the employees of
Beth Israel Hospital (as opposed to certain major financial companies that
shall remain nameless), who sacrificed money and perks so that their
colleagues could keep their jobs. And I’m talking about big fashion names
like Carmen Marc Valvo, who chose not to show this season in New York
City, and instead to team up with a Massachusetts organization that’s
desperately needed by women: Ovations for the Cure, which is committed
to raising awareness of ovarian cancer.
On May 2, Valvo’s designs will take Boston by storm with a runway benefit show at the Liberty Hotel (buy tickets at ovationsforthecure.org), and
this magazine will be the print media sponsor. We’re proud of that for two
big reasons: first, because the event will do lots to help women take care
of themselves at a time when funds are badly needed; second, it will have
brought a show as great as Valvo’s is known to be within our city limits.
I loved creating this year’s Beauty Issue — certainly because sharing
our staff’s beauty secrets means there will be more beauty around town,
but also because it prompted me to remember something my beloved
grandmother (a former artist and one-timemodel) has always advised:
“Look in the mirror, know that you look as good as you can, and then
forget about it.” In other words, get yourself gorgeous, then get yourself
out there and be the best version of a human being you know how.
Never has that been more necessary than right now. — ALEXANDRA HALL
